2. FieldGenius Android – Using RTK in the Field

In this course you will learn how to use RTK inside of FieldGenius. Although are guides specifically cover the Hemisphere S631, many of the procedures are nearly identical, no matter the receiver you are using. This includes creating your own project, how to properly set a project up, importing data and a general overview of how the software works.

Getting Your S631 Setup with UHF Radios

Getting your S631 setup is a piece of a cake. In this guide, we are going to show you how to get your S631 paired and setup over an unknown point. 

To begin, choose the Select Instrument option. 

Within the Instrument Profile menu, select the Add Profile option.

In the New Instrument Profile menu, and select the GNSS Reference option. 

Ensure that the Make and Model are set to Hemisphere and S631. Give the Profile an appropriate name. 

Once the settings are correct, select the Create option. 

With the Profile created, select the Setup Communication option. 

In the Communication menu, ensure the Connection Type is set to Bluetooth

Once selected, choose the Search option. 

Once the search is complete, select the Bluetooth option with the same name as the Serial Number on the bottom of the receiver. 

With the connection established, select the Connect option. 

Once the Bluetooth connection has completed, select the Setup Tolerance option. 

For most applications, the default Tolerance Settings are perfect. Select Ok to proceed. 

With the Tolerance Settings confirmed, select the Set Up Antenna Height option. 

Within the resulting menu, select the proper Measure Point and enter the Measured Height.

The measure point will vary based on the make and model of your receiver. For the proper measure point, please refer to the appropriate cheat sheet or the user manual of your receiver. 

Once finished, select the OK option. 

With the HI confirmed, select the next option, Set Up Reference Position. 

Next, ensure that the Observe option is selected. This will allow you to take an average of observations to use as the base position. 

To begin observing points, select the Start option. This will immediately begin averaging observations. 

When the number of observations you desire has been reached, press the Stop option. 

Next, select the Done option to complete the setup. 

With the position set, it is now time to setup the corrections broadcast. Select the Set Up Corrections option. 

Within the Corrections Menu, select your preferred communication method. Once selected, press Start Transmitting.

You have now completed the setup of your base station. If you need to start Raw Data Logging, please see the below guide.

Select Done once complete. You can now proceed to rover setup.

Using a SIM card for Your Network Rover?

With FieldGenius and the S631, it is very easy to use either a SIM card to connect to an NTRIP or CORS network. 

Before you begin, ensure that you have the APN information for your SIM card.

To begin, open FieldGenius and press Select Instrument

Next select the Add Profile option. 

In the New Instrument Profile, select the GNSS Rover option. 

Next, ensure that the Make is set to Hemisphere and the Model is to S631Give an appropriate Profile Name

Once complete, select the Create option to finish the setup. 

In the GNSS Profile menu, the first order of action is to select the Set Up Communication option. 

To begin, select the Search option. This will begin the look for any available Bluetooth devices. 

Locate the Bluetooth device with the same name as the Serial Number on the bottom of your receiver. 

You can find this serial number on the bottom in between the two battery doors. 

Once selected in the Bluetooth Device dropdown, select the Connect option. 

Once connected, the bluetooth light should be lit on your rover receiver. If the light remains on your base you have connected to your base rather than the rover. 

Next, select the Set Up Corrections option. 

In the Corrections menu, select the RTK Via Internet option. 

Next, select the Set Up Communication option. 

Select the Type as GNSS Mobile

Next, enter the APN information that is related to your SIM card. 

With the GNSS Mobile option selected and the APN information entered, press done. 

Next, select Set Up Data Source

In the Data Source field, select the Add Source option. 

Enter the information associated with your NTRIP account. 

Once the information has been entered, select the Done option. 

With the Data Source entered, select the Done option. 

Select the Connect option. 

If all has been entered correctly, you will see a list of base stations. Select the one that is best for your needs. Press select

With the Mountpoint selected, press the Confirm option. 

Unless you have a specific requirement leave the network options as is. 

On the main setup menu, select the Set Up Antenna Height option. 

Next, properly measure the antenna height of your receiver. There are two options, either to the bottom of the receiver or to the slant mark on the side. Use the diagram below for reference. 

With the proper height measured, enter the correct height option and measured value. 

Once set, select Ok

With the height entered, the final setup step is to select the Tolerance. Select the Set Up Active Tolerance option. 

Select your tolerance from the menu. 

With your Tolerance selected, press the Ok option. 

To learn more about Tolerances select the below option. 

With your setup, select Done to finish the setup. 

If your setup has gone successfully, you should have the radio light on the Hemisphere S631 blinking, and a fixed solution.

Using a Hot Spot for Your Network Rover?

With FieldGenius and the S631, it is very easy to use either a mobile hotspot or booster pack to connect to an NTRIP or CORS network. 

Before you begin, ensure that you have a wifi connection on your data collector. 

Once the WiFi network is connected, open FieldGenius and press the Select Instrument

Next select the Add Profile option. 

In the New Instrument Profile, select the GNSS Rover option. 

Next, ensure that the Make is set to Hemisphere and the Model is to S631Give an appropriate Profile Name

Once complete, select the Create option to finish the setup. 

In the GNSS Profile menu, the first order of action is to select the Set Up Communication option. 

To begin, select the Search option. This will begin the look for any available Bluetooth devices.

Select the Connect option. 

If all has been entered correctly, you will see a list of base stations. Select the one that is best for your needs. Press select

Need to Store Your Coordinates?

Recording your position is incredibly easy in FieldGenius. This will take a record of your coordinates at the moment of recording. Before you begin, ensure that your device is connected. 

Once connected, ensure you are on the Map Screen. To store a point, select the blue button in the bottom right corner. 

If using an RTK receiver, do not store your position unless the blue button says RTK Fixed

Next, you will be presented with a screen with your tolerance information. If all of your tolerances are met, you can select Store Position.

If some tolerances are met, but not all, and your tolerance allows it, you can select Override Tolerance to store the position. For more information on tolerances see the guide below. 

Next, you can enter the information relevant to your point. This includes the Description, Code, and any additional GIS Attributes and Pictures

Once complete, select the Save option. 

You are now ready to continue surveying and continuing with your project.

Want to Automatically Record Your Points?

Recording your points automatically is super simple inside of FieldGenius. To begin, ensure that you are connected to your receiver. 

To begin recording points, go to the Map Screen and select the Standard Measure option. 

In the pop-up menu, select the Auto Recording option. 

In the Auto Recording menu select the Interval ModeTime (or Distance) Interval, Point Name and select any relevant Code & Line Code

Once setup to your needs, select Ok

Next, you can select RTK Fixed (or whatever the appropriate tolerance is set as). You will see the time (or distance) to the point being stored in the green progress bar.  

You can stop or pause the recording, by select the stop or pause button in the bottom left corner. 

It is recommended to use an auto store tolerance setup. To see how to edit your tolerances, check out this guide.
