Calculating a Volume
Using the Surface Manager in FieldGenius, we can quickly calculate the volume of a pile. To begin, ensure that you are connected to your instrument.
Digitizing the Pile
To begin, store points around the base of your pile. Select RTK Fixed.
Store your point, and associate a Description with the point.
It is recommended to use one description for your base. It will make it easier to create your surfaces.
Select Store Point.
With the base of the pile digitized, next move to the body of the pile. Again, select RTK Fixed.
Store your point, and associate a different Description with the point.
You must use a description that is different from that of your base. Otherwise you will not be able to create the surfaces required to calculate the volume.
Select Store Point.
Creating the Base Surface
The next step is to create the surface that will make up the base of the surface. To properly create this surface, first select the Description or Automap Library.
In the Automap Library, locate the description for your base. Select Edit.
In your base description, ensure that Do not assign to DTM is unchecked.
Select Ok.
Next, locate the description you used for the body of your pile. Again, select Edit.
Unlike the description you used for the base, ensure the Do not assign to DTM is checked. Select Ok to save any changes.
Next, return to the Map Screen by selecting Save.
From the Map Screen, select the Surface Manager.
In the Surface Manager menu, select the Point Database and subsequently Save.
Save your surface in a suitable location. The default, inside your project folder is the recommended spot.
Next, return to the Map Screen and select the Automap library again.
Again locate your body pile description and select Edit.
Uncheck the Do not assign to DTM option.
Return to the Map Screen by selecting the save button.
Calculating the Volume
With your surfaces prepared, select the Surface Manager option.
In the menu, select the Load option.
Locate your base surface and select Open.
With your surface loaded, select Volume.
In the Volume calculation menu, select the Calculate Surface as the Point Database and the Reference Surface as the Base Surface.
To perform the calculation, select Calculate.
You will then see a screen with your results.
